For the past 15 years, I've been building global payment systems for companies such as PayPal, BILL, and Uber. These experiences gave me a front-row seat to both the capabilities and limitations of the world's payment infrastructure.

At Uber, millions of drivers, couriers, and restaurants in 70+ countries were paid daily or weekly—on time, every time. Building a system capable of executing billions of dollars in payments with reliability and scalability showed me what works but also where the global payment ecosystem falls short.

Why Mesta Exists: Addressing a Broken Payment Infrastructure

Today, if you want to execute a cross-border payment, there are two predominant options:

1. SWIFT/Wire Payments:A messaging service that sends instructions between banks to update their ledgers. The actual money movement is separate, slow, expensive, and often passes through multiple correspondent banks, making it hard to track.
2. Pre-Funded Liquidity Pools in multiple currencies:Payment processors and banks maintain massive pools of funds in multiple currencies. While this is faster, it's costly. Running these pools demands capital-intensive treasury operations, which drive up fees and inefficiencies. Thus only a handful of payment processors are able to successfully use this option.

Both systems are relics of the past, not fit for today's globalized, real-time economy. Mesta believes there's a better way.
